How to catch a lost hamster…

Today this blog entry received a comment, asking for help:

“omg help I lost my hamster and I don’t know what to do please help me it’s been 2 days”.

Hamsters are escapologists. They make break-outs a profession. They are such curious little love hearts and regard themselves as explorers as well. Don’t worry about your hamster. It will be back. Just leave the cage on the floor with some food in and his homely sleeping house and he will return regularly at night to fill up his cheeks. My hamster likes to dig himself into and behind the sofa and the heating when he is out on leave.

It might be best to first find out in which room (s)he is and then leave the cage on the floor with some food and I guarantee the hamster will be back at night when it’s calm.

The only difficulty will be for you to wake up when (s)he is in the cage.

Alternatively, you could put sunflower seeds on the floor in each room and then the next day find out in which room they are gone. Sometimes it also smells horrible when the hamster goes to the toilet and wees, which can determine in which room it is.

Key to finding him is to keep the doors shut in your house so the hamster can not change rooms. It might be best if the hamster is in the bedroom, then you’ll wake up when it’s back in its cage and you could just close the doors and put the upper part of the cage back. Otherwise, it will most likely just fill up the cheeks and return to freedom and build another hoard somewhere in the room.

Sometimes it might also help if you sit on the floor and watch television in the evening for some hours, but pretty quietly not quite in the dark, but also not in too bright conditions and if you have some nice smelling food around on the floor, such as freshly cut carrots, cucumber, corn/maize, and similar, the hamster might leave the hiding place and come out to get it. Don’t rush to catch him/her, just watch where he/she is hiding and taking the food- it will have its hoard there and be a regular visitor to this favourite place. If your hamster isn’t tame you might not be able to catch him by hand – it is astonishing how they can squeeze themselves away and they rather jump down into unknown depths than consider giving up. Best is to leave a little box lying around where he can go into and examine- or his sleeping house, and you might just be able to pick him up in the box.
My hamster is now pretty tame so he runs around every evening during the news and when I watch telly. He even comes when I call him and I can pick him up by hand. If you feed him from your hand, it will get tame quite quickly and then it is easier to catch it after it escapes, in total Fluffy doesn’t escape at all anymore because he knows he gets a walk nearly every evening (apart from when I have guests).

Fluffy usually gets active at around 8pm till about midnight and also has a morning session at dawn.

I have had 3 hamsters in my life and more than once have they escaped, at least the first one. I had better cages with more interesting things for my last two hamsters which I had at the same time.

Anyhow I was a heart broken 8-year-old when my first hamster disappeared. I looked and looked in the morning for him and could not find him. Finally I had to go to school and I put on my jacket which was hanging from the back of a chair. Guess what! There was a warm lump in the jacket where my hamster was sleeping in the lining. He was happy to crawl out and into my pocket and hand and I could put him away in his cage and go to school.

The second escape was when the cage was in the basement instead of the kitchen. or my bedroom. I hunted and hunted again. My Mom said that hamsters are very curious animals and that he was probably quietly sitting somewhere watching us look for him. She said just to sit still and wait and he would come out wriggling his nose to investigate.

The advice given seems hamsterly wise and likely to find the errant hammy in the house. You just have to be a bit careful when sitting on sofas and with keeping doors shut. Hamsters can probably get through any door without weather stripping though. They can get through a hole as small as a quarter.

Gosh now I am thinking of getting another hamster, or maybe a pair of gerbils, I’ve never had a Guinea pig or rabbit though…

I have a hamster I got from the little kids I tuter. I just got back from a 12 band thing, its almost three oclock here, and I went to feed him and found him gone. I have Three cats in the house, which is why usaully the room he is kept in is closed at all times and the cats never ever allowed in, with the idea that if he escaped it wouldn’t be too bad of a problem, because he would be somewhere safe. Only my dad left the door open for whats counts for more then twenty four hours now. My cats don’t hide their food as some do, so I know he’s not dead yet, thank heavens, but I need a fast way to find him. Even if I could have a quick less then a day way of finding what room he’s in it would be a help, cause one of my cats is a wicked good hunter…. and smart to boot. Any help will really be appriated. Thanks,

could you help me find my hamster? He has been gone for 2 days and when he was lost the cage was on the counter next to the refrigerator. I’m afraid that he went behind the frige and into the air ducts that open up behind the frige. I have moved the frige but he wasn’t there. it’s posible that he didn’tgo behind the frige but what can I do to catch him?

Hi. My name is erik and i have lost my hamster, havent seen him for a day. i have 2 of them, they are dwarfs. the one i lost must have gotten out of his cage through a hole that was uncovered on the top. he was in my livingroom at the time overnight in his cage when he got out. the next day i went and looked for him and i couldnt find him. i cleaned out the cage, and looked EVERYWHERE in the house, behind and underneath everything. I set out traps overnight using all the traps i have read about (none deadly of course). this morning i checked the traps, they are all empty…im very worried becuse i have a dog too. she is a chesapeake bay retriever, and she doesnt seem like she would eat a hamster. Normally when she does something wrong i ask her about it , and she scowards with her tail between her legs but this time she just wagged her tail, i dont know if she did it. i am very worried and sad and i dont know what to do. if my dog ate it, how would i find out? if not, what can i do otherwise.

Please, anyone who noes the ansewer to any of these questions, email me at asap.

I lost my hamster today accidentally, and I have tried everything. I have placed flour by every door and around piles of food, and yet the hamster still hasnt returned. I also did the bucket thing, and put her cage on the floor. This is not the first time I have lost a hamster, but I really want her back. Any more suggestions?

please help me, I had some friends round and the hamster shot out of my friends hand and under the airing cupboard she is only a dwarf hamster and I am so worried as she could have squeezed into the wall and because there are gaps she may have gone down a hole and under the floorboards it has been roughly about 24 hours now and I am soooo worried that she might get hurt, I have but out some water and food and bedding where I found loads of her droppings but I have just recently checked and blocked up the holes and I cant seem to find her we have had to knock a hole in the ceiling downstairs and we haven’t found her yet, I cant’t see the bucket trap working as she is only little and maynot be able too climb up the books. Also what foods are safe for dwarf roborovski hamsters so that I can try and lure her out if it is not already too late. 🙁 please help me soon, Abi. p.s. if she did go down a hole into the floor should I block it up or not because I wondered if she was already in the airing cupboard somewhere that she could not fall down but I am also worried that that might mean that she won’t be able to come back up, please help.

I think it may have gotten into the storage cupboard where there is a lot of insulation, I am really worried and have been in tears. Please help it is the best pet I have ever had and I don’t want to loose it now.

you should try getting a big bucket and some string. put the string over the bucket and put a pieace of wood agenst the bucket and put some
penut butter on the string and your hamster will smell the penut butter and climb up the wood and on to the string an then she/he will fall into the
buket but put somthing soft in the bottom.

OMG! 2 days ago i bought a hamster and this morning shes gone! I have tried to look for her everywhere and unfortunately i live in a 3 floor house that has 8 bedrooms…i dont know exactly which room shes in and shes not used to me yet so i dont know much about her at all, this is the first time she has escaped and since i have 2 other chihuahus in the house im really scared for her life! I believe there are rats in my house along with rat holes all around the house as well (ew!) so does this mean the chances of finding her is next to impossible? this is my first time being a hamster owner and im so heartbroken…any advice is appreciated…thank you soo much!

Well I sure he has had no water and I have set up traps and tried looking in every single room on my second floor! I have checked places multiple times! I need help and quick before he dies! My dad said he might have escaped through our heating vent. This is horrible. I have only had him for 2 months!

If you are looking for a lost hamster (of any breed) then i have the perfect thing for you!!!!!

Here’s what you do:

First, make sure all the doors in your house stay closed. And watch where you walk! Make sure none of the electrical wires in your house are not on the floor. Then, put some food in the floor of each room. (Try an apple slice, which has a strong smell.) Keep checking each room to see where the food has been eaten. Once you see that the food is gone, you’ll know what room your hamster is in. Then you can search carefully.

A tricker method: Place a towel in the bottom of a bucket. Then, place a piece of apple in the bucket. Make a little staircase out of books leading up to the top of the bucket. Your hamster may fall for the trick, and you may find him in the bucket.

Hope this helps!!! Kat

Comment by Kat on 2007-06-04 22:06:14 +0100

Quike reminder…

Make sure you put food in every room and close the door and check the food!!! And try the bucket thing… it works most of the time!!!! :)… Be that not… 🙁

Comment by Raul on 2007-06-07 22:56:31 +0100

I just lost my hamster again today, I have found droppings on the staircase (his cage is on the second floor) and the a lot more droppings in the bathroom!? Does that mean he’s in there? I sure hope he didn’t burrow through the wall or my mom will kill me. Darn, I wish I had cat now. At least I would be sure he can bring him back dead or alive. I think I’m going to try the bucket trick tonight with some peanut butter and apple. Let’s hope he gets back as I am leaving on vacation in two days and it seems like a catasrophe waiting to happen. I don’t care if he ran away outside, my only worry is that my mom might find him before I do or worse, he starts chewing through the house.

in Tennessee from my aunt Linda’s house in Arkansas! Socks (my hamster) has been loose since some time this morning, my mom was cleaning out her cage and Socks was in her little ball that runs in place. So I’ve got three cats, one of them a kiten with sharp teeth and claws. Well, mom left the door open as she cleaned the cage, and the hamsters knocked the ball over and the haster got loose. So now we’ve got two dogs and three cats AND a hamster running loose in the house. HELP!

Hamsters are natural escape artists. We’re on no.6 and mostof them have escaped at tome time or other. We have caught previous escapees in a bucket trap, and once, after hamster missing for 2 weeks, living under sink in kitchen, we borrowed a humane trap from the council and caught him in that. I’m told that using a hamster of the opposite sex, and putting it in the cage on the floor of the room you think hammy is in, will attract them.

Hi I’m Rebecca. I just went into the bathroom where we keep my hamsters at night because their cage is SO noisy and the top of one of the cages was off. Of course there was no hamster to be found. We think it got away in my bedroom because my sister had JUST moved it into the bathroom and the lid was in my bedroom. I have a cat and two dogs. My cat has allready claimed the life of one of my original hamsters which is actually the sister to the one that I have in the bathroom this very moment NOT missing. I don’t know how i am going to keep that cat away from her. I also don’t see how she could have gotten the lid off her cage. The problem is I don’t know how long she’s been missing. I think only a few hours but for all I kmow it could be around a day now. If you have any suggestions or stories you want to tell me about your hamster and how to find mine please e-mail me at
Thanks again!

Hello, I am extremely nervous because I cannot find my hamsters anywhere. They have been gone for quite some time. There was a mother, a male, and they produced 3 babies… This is what I’m nervous about… 5 HAMSTERS ON THE LOOSE! AND WHAT IF THEY PRODUCE MORE? THEY COULD BE ALL OVER THE PLACE!

Something I am very worried about is if there will be other rodents around… Will RATS invade my home? Will they eat the hamsters? What if the hamsters die? Will they attract new rodents?

I placed food and the cage and fresh water on the ground… Next day it was all gone… I just don’t know what to do. I know that they’re nocturnal and like to come out at night, but when will one ever be able to catch them if we need light for them to be visible? My son lost his hamster a few days ago and we tried the empty bucket with the ruler trick-It didn’t work.
So I came up with this idea. Get a bucket (or cardboard box), string some fishing wire (or thread/yarn whatever you have handy) from each handle of the bucket so it runs across the bucket. Now put food on there that your hamster can’t resist (we used cauliflower). Use books or VHS tapes to make stairs up to the ledge of the bucket. When the hamster tries to walk across the fishing wire to get his treat- he falls in!
I think this worked so well and so quickly because the hamster could smell/see the cauliflower.
Try it – it’s a brilliant!

I don’t know if he escaped or not but i can’t find him. And even worse they have an outside cat that loves to kill animals but the cat must be inside because we can’t let her in at midnight. I am freaking out trying to find this hamster please help me some one!!:(

I have dismantled my lounge wall at the bottom, because we could hear our lost hammy scratching there, but even though we have made a hole for her and left food and water by it, there has been no sign and now I think she might die. There is no food or water behing the wall. It is terribly upsetting to think she is there and might starve to death. The bucket thing can’t work if thewy are trapped somewhere and can’t get out’

I used to have an Albino hamster and it was really tame to me but bit everyone else!! i nearly cried when it died :'(. now ive got this dwarf hamster and the otherday it escaped! so i moved my bed and i found it there asleep but then it woke up and started to run so i bloked it off with loads of objects and got its house so then it had no choice but to go into the hole in the house.

Hi, i read something that said to turn off the lights at night and look through a camera on nightvision mode, the hamster(s) eyes will be bright dots, and they should be awake at some point during the night. Hope this helps, i’m going to try it tonight to look for our hamster who escaped this morning. Good luck to others

Comment by Sunshine on 2010-12-22 08:22:41 +0100

This is to blogger number 88 you should totaly make like a trial of food to try to get your hamster to go into your room. As for your dogs it depense on what type they are if their nice old dogs I would not worry about a thing but if their big mean and scary rot- rulers I might want to have their stomaches looked at by a docter. Check for any cracks in the wall incase it is in there the wall. Sorry for the bad spelling if your a spelling master or something like that.

My hampster is the cutest hampster ever. He is a teddy bear hampster and is all white with pink extremities. He is very tame and even uses a litter box. I must have forgotten to close the cage door to his multi fortress resort when I cleaned the litter box and he is no where to be found. His cage is in my finished basement, but unfortunately the door to the unfinished portion was open so pretty much the whole basement is game for search. Due the clutter mess in the unfinished portion of the basement I’m so nervous that I’m not going to catch him. I currently have portions of his fortress in each portion of the basement with food and water. I’m hoping that he will just come back to eat and go up in one of his lofts. I want to find him so bad. Thinking that I may put flour down around his cage/food and see if that will help me find him. I’m just at least hoping to find some food missing tomorrow indicating that he is still with us. Why can’t he now just come when i call his name and we would be good. ugh.

I fly around the world alot for work, I returned yesterday, my partner said he saw 1 of our dwarf hamsters strolling around, he picked her up & put her back in her cage. This 1 has got out before and our other 1 stayed in, so we presumed the other one wasn’t much of an explora. We soon realised they both had got out, I’ve set up the bucket trap tonight, hope it works. The hamster we found is acting strange without her sister, any other tips incase this isn’t successful?

I found out that my boxer Abby dog has this problem and i have been struggling with
how to help her. I have a wood specialty friend that made me a chair for
her. It is adjustable to any size dog, a hole for the tail to stick out, a
whole for a dog food tray which tilts upwards or down. He has custom made
this just for my Abby dog. His name is brown white and he will make
them just will have to pay for shipping. He is excellent at what he does,
he built me this chair in 2 days.

My sister let my hamster go in the basement recently. There are so many bad things that could have been done. We have mice ,because we live in the woods, and there were several poison traps out at the time. Because of the fact that his ‘cage’ is a tank, there is no straight way I can lure him in without a mess. Any ideas? I really don’t want to stay up till 3:00 in the morning no matter how much I want to find him.
Email me if you have advice-
